Jazz Wolubs

Nic Brown Over the course of several excellent EPs, Mattwizard has demonstrated what may well be his unique gift for fusing the tinkling ivories, saxophone blurts and real time jazz percussion with the aggressive 140bpm thrust of grime so his debut full-length was, for me, one of the most anticipated of the year. "Jazz Wolubs" does not disappoint. The cross-pollination of genres is what keeps music moving forward and what's refreshing here is that jazz and grime are conjoined without the smoothing off of their rough edges for the sake of commerciality. If ever a band (it'll probably be The Body) attempts to discover if doom metal and Balearic House share a commonality that's worth exploring, I don't want any perceived clashed of personality toned down. Mattwizard has hit on a rare snatch of uniquity you wouldn't find anywhere else but on Bandcamp. Big salutes to both of them.

about

Dear Astronomical Cat,

This album started out as an idea for an E.P and just kinda grew into this wolubs party. I was just tryna experiment with improvisation and making things sound more like they was played live while still working in the 140 bpm grime space mainframe. Most of the tracks are just layers of improvisation, even things like the structure of the songs are just me following the first ideas i had through to a logical conclusion.

Intergalactic peace ups and universal love expansions,

Matt the Wizard.
